How to Get Better Results from AI Image Prompts
Learn the essential techniques for writing stronger AI image prompts and getting more consistent, high-quality visual results.

AI image generators can produce remarkable results, but the quality of the final image depends heavily on how clearly you describe what you want. A vague instruction leaves the AI to make dozens of decisions for you. A well-structured prompt gives it a much clearer creative direction.
Start with a useful image-prompt formula
A strong image prompt can follow this structure:
Subject + Appearance + Pose + Clothing + Environment + Lighting + Camera + Style + Quality
Instead of writing:
Make a picture of a man in a city.
Try:
Create a photorealistic full-body portrait of a confident adult man standing on a rain-soaked city street at night. He wears a tailored black jacket, dark trousers and clean white sneakers. Blue and amber neon lights reflect from the wet pavement. Cinematic lighting, realistic skin texture, shallow depth of field, 85mm photography, premium advertising photography, highly detailed.
10 ways to improve your image prompts
1. Describe the main subject first
Clearly tell the AI what or who should dominate the image. Put the most important subject information near the beginning of the prompt.
2. Specify the composition
Use terms such as close-up, waist-up, full-body, wide-angle, overhead or low-angle. Composition instructions help the AI decide how much of the subject and environment should be visible.
3. Describe the environment
Instead of saying “outside”, specify a beach at sunset, futuristic city, luxury office, misty forest, neon arcade or minimalist studio.
4. Control the lighting
Try cinematic lighting, golden-hour sunlight, soft studio lighting, neon illumination, dramatic rim lighting, diffused daylight or moody low-key lighting.
5. Mention the camera look
Terms such as 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, macro photography, shallow depth of field and documentary photography can influence the final photographic appearance.
6. Describe clothing precisely
Colours, materials, fit and style can dramatically improve consistency. “Black jacket” is useful; “tailored charcoal wool blazer over a black crew-neck shirt” is better.
7. Specify the mood
Useful mood words include luxurious, dramatic, peaceful, mysterious, energetic, futuristic, nostalgic, playful and cinematic.
8. State the desired visual style
Photorealistic, cinematic, editorial fashion, graphic novel, watercolour, 3D render and minimalist illustration can produce completely different results.
9. Tell the AI what must remain consistent
When you are working from a reference photograph or product image, clearly state which identity or design characteristics must remain unchanged.
10. Refine instead of starting again
If an image is nearly right, ask the AI to change only the parts that need improvement. This can preserve a composition you already like.
Professional image-prompt template
Create a [STYLE] image of [SUBJECT]. The subject is [APPEARANCE] and is [POSE/ACTION]. They are wearing [CLOTHING]. The scene takes place in [ENVIRONMENT]. Use [LIGHTING] with a [MOOD] atmosphere. Camera treatment: [CAMERA/LENS]. Include [IMPORTANT DETAILS]. Maintain realistic proportions, accurate anatomy, natural textures and professional composition. Aspect ratio: [RATIO].
Quick editing tip
When a result is close but not quite right, avoid rewriting the entire prompt. Try an instruction such as:
Keep everything else unchanged but make the lighting warmer and move the subject slightly to the left.
Clear, specific prompts do not need to be unnecessarily complicated. The goal is to give the AI enough useful direction to reduce guesswork.
