Claude for Beginners: Start Creating with AI

Claude is an AI assistant created by Anthropic. For a beginner, the easiest way to use Claude is to treat it like a knowledgeable assistant that you can give instructions to in ordinary language.

1. What can Claude do?

Claude can help turn ideas and information into useful outputs. Common beginner tasks include:

• drafting letters and emails,
• summarising documents,
• rewriting complicated text,
• brainstorming,
• creating plans,
• analysing information,
• explaining unfamiliar topics,
• organising notes, and
• developing longer pieces of writing.

2. Start your first conversation

Begin with something simple:

I am learning about artificial intelligence for the first time. Explain what a large language model is without using technical jargon.

Then follow up with:

Give me an everyday analogy.

And then:

Now explain it in five bullet points.

3. Give Claude a role

One easy way to improve a prompt is to tell Claude the type of assistance you want.

Act as a patient computer tutor. Explain how to back up my important files. Assume I am a beginner using Windows.

Or:

Act as a small-business marketing assistant. Give me ten inexpensive ideas for attracting new local customers.

4. Add useful background

Instead of:

Write an advertisement.

Try:

Write a Facebook advertisement for a local computer repair business. The customers are mainly home users aged 40 and over. Keep the wording friendly, trustworthy and easy to understand.

5. Work with documents

If your Claude plan supports document uploads, add a file to the conversation and ask:

Give me a plain-English summary of this document.

Or:

Identify the main points, anything requiring action, and any dates mentioned.

6. Improve a result instead of starting again

If Claude creates something that feels too formal, simply continue with:

• Make it warmer and less formal.
• Shorten it by about 30%.
• Give me a stronger opening sentence.
• Rewrite it for a complete beginner.

7. Ask Claude to help plan the task

If you are not sure what information to provide, ask Claude to interview you first:

I need help planning a project but I am not sure what information you need. Ask me the questions you need before creating the plan.
